The high temperatures reached by the engine, caused by the combustion inside the cylinders, must be dispersed on the outside: the cooling circuit is responsible for regulating engine temperature.

During combustion, inside an engine, temperatures of between 1700°C and 2500°C are reached, and some of the heat is transmitted to the cylinder walls, the pistons, the engine head and the valves. If these parts are not sufficiently cooled, they could reach high enough temperatures to cause them damage, putting the engine function at risk.
Thermal energy is dissipated using a liquid coolant which heats by circulating through the engine's various spaces. The coolant can also directly cool the engine lubrication oil or the transmission oil in vehicles with automatic transmission.
This fluid takes heat from the engine and disperses it to the outside air using a special exchanger: the radiator.
The cooling system must ensure:
The purpose of the radiator is to cool the engine and keep it at the optimum running temperature, ensuring efficient engine function over a prolonged period with improved energy efficiency.
It is almost always located at the front of the vehicle, near to the air intakes, in order to make the most of the dynamic effect created by the speed of advancement.
For much of automotive history, the radiator was the most visible part of the engine, with a distinctive style, adorned with an emblem and chrome plated. Nowadays it is located underneath the bonnet and the front fairing and is better protected against accidental impacts.
Basically, the radiator is made up of two tanks connected by a series of tubes, through which the coolant fluid runs, circulated by the water pump, which is actioned mechanically by the engine itself.
This increases the air flow passing through the radiator when the vehicle is travelling at low speed or is stationary. The fan is located near to the radiator and is only activated when needed, when the engine cooling circuit temperature reaches a standard value; vehicles with climate control have more powerful fans. With their precision fluid dynamic definition, Mopar® original fans ensure reduced noise and increased efficiency.
The heating radiator, or the heater, is an integral part of the climate control system, but it is fed by the engine cooling circuit. It uses the heat contained in the coolant at high temperatures and provides heat to the passenger compartment when the passenger compartment fan control is activated. The heater is always present, both in climate controlled vehicles and heated vehicles.
The water pump ensures the circulation of liquid throughout the circuit, providing the coolant with the pressure and flow it needs whatever the running conditions.
It takes its power from the timing belt and its rpm is linked to the engine rpm; it functions right from when the engine is first switched on, even if it is cold and there is no actual need for the coolant to circulate. To prevent unnecessary cooling, the thermostat therefore intervenes to open the flow of coolant towards the radiator, only once a very precise temperature has been reached.
Mopar® original water pumps are manufactured from high performing materials which have been evolved over time to become longer lasting and resistant to ever higher temperatures.
The coolant must be compatible with the various types of metal used in the engine cooling system, so as to avoid corrosion, and must have the required characteristics to ensure the correct thermal exchange. Fiat Professional recommends Paraflu, the protective fluid for professional radiators, designed to meet all your needs, even in the harshest running conditions. Paraflu UP, based on inhibited mono ethylene glycol with organic formula and created using O.A.T.(Organic Acid Technology), is the protective fluid designed especially for cooling systems which contain innovative materials such as lightweight alloys (magnesium and aluminium).
Use PARAFLU UP to:
Paraflu products are known for their high quality and state of the art technology, which is why they are recommended directly by the manufacturer with type approval certification from CTR Fiat (9.55523 CONTRACTUAL TECHNICAL REF.No.F101.M01, ASTM D 3306 Type 1, CUNA NC 956-16), CTR Chrysler (MS 12106) and CTR Iveco (18-1830,CONTRACTUAL TECHNICAL REF. No.I002.C00, CUNA NC 956-16, ASTM D 3306 Type 1, ASTM D 6210 Type 1-FF).To ensure your vehicle's cooling system is correctly maintained, always choose Paraflu protective agents for radiators, distributed by Petronas Lubricants, and Mopar® original spare parts, available throughout the official Fiat Professional network, because they are guaranteed by the manufacturers of your car to be safe, high quality, resistant and eco-friendly.
Unsuitable fluids may be inefficient from a heat exchange point of view, and provide inadequate protection against corrosion, leading to the subsequent deterioration of the various surfaces in the cooling circuit. They may also be ineffective in preventing the dangerous phenomenon of cavitation.
For this reason, the type of coolant which should be used in your car is specified in the owner handbook.
Paraflu is an antifreeze which works efficiently, even in the harshest running conditions. It offers the perfect protection for cooling systems, guaranteeing optimum removal of heat from the engine combustion chamber and maximum protection against freezing, deposits and corrosion. For optimum protection, it is recommended that the product is mixed with 50% water to achieve a freezing point of -50°C.
There are various liquids and powders on the market which promise to plug small leaks. These systems have no proven technical value and may even lead to serious engine and water pump problems. In the case of confirmed loss of fluid from the radiator, it is highly recommended that it is replaced with an original spare part.
The engine coolant pump works as an active component in harmony with the timing components because it is driven by the toothed belt. The moving parts of the water pump, like the other components, suffer the same wear and tear over time. When servicing the timing system, it is recommended that you replace all connected components at the same time as the timing belt, such as the tensioner bearings, transmission roll and the water pump. For the ordinary maintenance of your vehicle, visit the Fiat Professional Service Network and ask for a Mopar® timing kit: all you need for a convenient and reliable servicing solution.
Leaking coolant can cause a rapid decrease in cooling capacity. A red gauge will light up on the dashboard to indicate the high temperature. As soon as it is safe, you must immediately stop your vehicle, switch off the engine and call Roadside Assistance.
As well as radiator malfunction, excessive coolant temperature may also be caused by faults in other system components, such as the water pump or the fan. We recommend that you have your cooling system checked regularly at an Authorised Service Centre, to check the function of the radiator and the cooling circuit components (including the tubes and sleeves). Check and top up fluid level is required each service.Whenever it is necessary, top up the coolant level according to the instructions in the owner handbook.
To ensure your vehicle's cooling system is correctly maintained, always choose Mopar® original spare parts, because they are guaranteed by the manufacturers of your car as safe, high quality, resistant and eco-friendly. Original spare parts guarantee the same efficiency as components fitted on a new car, so that the performance of your car remains just as Fiat Professional intended for you.
